Discrete Time

One interest I explore in this piece is the idea of “humans mimicking machines mimicking humans.” I was especially interested in using short sounds as a way of reducing musical material to the simplest possible form. Much of the piece treats the small orchestra in terms of its separate sections: strings, winds, brass, and percussion. This piece was written for the Eastman Graduate Composers’ Sinfonietta in 2022, conducted by Floris Van der Veken.
