For Loop
This piece was first conceived as a Youtube Short, which you can find on my channel here. I was interested in engaging critically with the short video format, and decided to write a looping “crab canon,” consisting of two musical lines which are reversals of each other. This idea has been used in western classical music for hundreds of years. In this case, however, the two voices a literal reversals of each other through reversing the recording.
The live concert version was put together completely after the fact. I attempted to deal with the issue of bringing the non-linear time of the short video format into the linear time of a concert performance. The computer records audio continuously and every minute, reverses the sound of the previous minute. In addition, the premiere included a live feedback process, where the speakers were placed behind the violinist and audio is fed back into the microphones. As a result, the violinist constantly plays in counterpoint with a reversed version of their own sound, not only from one minute ago but also a re-reversed recording of two minutes ago, three minutes ago, and so on.
